For the longest time I did not include any clouds in my paintings because I simply did not know how to paint them. I got tired painting empty skies, so I decided to spend a day studying these fluffy things. I must admit, they are quite challenging to paint because there is constant jumping back and forth between soft and hard edge. Also there are many subtleties in color and value shift, which makes it even trickier to paint. The next step is to apply what I learned in these studies. Hopefully my next piece will have some clouds!

Learn how to draw & paint clouds in this photoshop clouds tutorial, with commentary / audio. In this step by step time-lapse we will be covering some of the most important fundamentals to painting clouds. In this digital art demo, we will be using photoshop but the discussed techniques and tips can be applied to any medium.

Environment Design Rocks – Week 02

This week’s assignment for Environment Design Rocks was to do 5 value sketches that display at least one of each: 1 point, 2 point, and 3 point perspective / A viewpoint looking up or down at something / something massive in size / a vista that looks far out into the distance / something engineered. To begin with, I did some notan sketches (left side) and then chose 5 compositions for the value sketches.

I struggled this week because I was sick for a few days. Thankfully I finished just on time! I noticed that I struggle to make environments that are more accurate in perspective. I have been so used to making pieces that are more flat in nature. I have also observed that most of my environments show a vast open scene. I don’t have many pieces that show a close up scene. Maybe that is something I can work towards in the upcoming weeks.

Painting and Photo Studies

Wow, I cant remember the last time I did a photo/painting study. I used to do them all the time and I do not know why I stopped. I certainly regret it now because my work has been getting stale. My sense of color and composition needs improvement, so that has been my main focus. I have also been trying to watch how others artists handle their edges and brush marks. I especially enjoy pieces of work with suggestive details. A painting that reads with minimum brushstrokes is something quite magical.
